Rhodonite is a manganese inosilicate mineral and a member of the Pinacoidal group. It was initially discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia around the 1790s. Rhodonite is the official gemstone of Massachusetts. It is commonly found in the form of stalactites and stalagmites in the caves of Argentina. It occurs commonly as cleavable to compact masses with a rose-red color often tending to brown because of surface oxidation. Rhodonite gets its name from the Greek, “rhodos” meaning rosy. Roses are a symbol of love and romance, but can also mean secrecy or confidentiality.
